We recently sat down with comedian and actor Bill Engvall to learn more about him and his expansive career. He is performing in the Expo Center at 8 p.m. May 28.
We’re excited to have you as the first act in our Expo Center! When was the last time you performed in Milwaukee and what can fans expect at your May 28 show?
I’m not exactly sure of the date, but I remember having a great time and going to a Brewers game and getting to sit in the dugout with Harry Doyle (Bob Uecker) from “Major League.” It was a great day! The show that I’m bringing to Milwaukee is a little different because my career was made talking about what it’s like being a dad. Now, my kids are grown and I’m writing like I did before I had children. We’re going to talk about Dancing with the Stars, getting older and obviously, I’ll be doing some Here's Your Sign material.
Besides your work as a stand-up comedian, you’ve also been an actor, game show host, writer, producer and recently appeared on “Dancing with the Stars.” Which of these was the most challenging for you?
I guess the hardest thing I did recently was “Dancing with the Stars.” It was so far out of my comfort zone and was, without a doubt, the hardest workout I have ever done. I lost three pants sizes during my time on the show!
Speaking of your stint on “Dancing with the Stars,” you went pretty far in the competition and almost made it in the top three. What was that experience like and would you do it again?
It was the most wonderful, rewarding thing that I have done. It was fun and challenging. If they called me tomorrow and said they wanted me back on the show, I would drop everything and go back to dancing.
How often do you stay in touch with the guys from the Blue Collar Tour and will there ever be a reunion tour someday?
I stay in touch with the guys on a fairly regular basis. I would love to do a reunion tour, but not sure if that will ever happen. But I would be in 200%.
You’ve been married to your wife, Gail, for over 30 years now. What’s your secret to a long and happy marriage?
HAHAHAHA! I don’t really know the secret. I guess I would say keeping the lines of communication open and always kissing each other goodnight.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
I love anything outdoors, whether it’s fishing, hunting or hiking. I’m also a golf addict and will play anytime, anywhere. It’s a sickness. I really wish there was a golf rehab!
Who, or what, makes you laugh the most?
I’m an easy mark. I love to laugh, so obviously I’m a huge fan of comedy. However, you should know to never ask a comedian what makes him laugh because sometimes, it’s pretty dark. I’m not saying that’s me, but a lot of things do make me laugh.
